Hi, everyone. As you might have noticed, I kind of got off kilter with my schedule. And, I'm leaving for about ten days for New Orleans. So, what I'm going to do is this: I'm going to upload a few tracks for a sample, and then do a large double-episode-y thing when I get back. Sound ok?

Taster tracks:Collapse )

And now, Box.net is not very well known, but there are some cool, cool things you can do with it. To hear an individual track without downloading, click the options triangle to the right of the track name, and hit play. To download the individual track, do the same thing, but hit download. To hear all the tracks, in the order they're listed on the page, click the triangle next to the orange PenniPod above all of the tracks, on the left, and click play music. To download all of the tracks as a zip, go to the same place and click zip folder.

Hi, everyone. I've been having some troubles this week, as you might have guessed. First, I went away for a few days. I had the post and the podcast done, but when I got back, I realized that I had forgotten to hit Update Journal. Whoops! And then, I decided to listen to the podcast from the download link, and I realized that it skipped terribly. So, I have some options for you. You can download the podcast here, in a .wav format (which, according to my testing, should work with winamp, iTunes (and iPod), MusicMatch Jukebox, and Windows Media Player--it ought to work with other players, but I haven't tried anything else). You can just download the tracks and read a rough transcript right hereCollapse ). Or, you can download the mp3 version and just deal with the skips.

As always, feel free to mention artists or songs I should consider, or any comments you have! I'm always open to suggestions.

Episode 3
Hi, everyone. Download the podcast here. As always, feel free to mention artists or songs I should consider, or any comments you have! I'm always open to suggestions.

For the record, you do not need an ipod to listen. The podcast is in mp3 format and you can listen to it on any program that will play mp3s.

Meh, ep3 isn't my best, but the songs are still good even if I'm kind of spazzy.

Tracks for Sunday, May 28

  • Matt Caplan - Europe

  • Lyrics unavailable, Matt's website here, MySpace here.
Matt's from New York, and, although he occasionally tours with Joshua Kobak, both of his albums are solo. Matt's released two self-produced albums. His first is no longer in production, but his second, Overtones, can be bought from CDbaby or Attitude Media. And, at CDbaby, that cd has more than 100 reviews--and I saw one that was four stars instead of five as all the rest were.

Matt is working on a third CD with a full band, so keep your eyes open for that.

  • Damien Jurado - Abilene

  • Lyrics here, website here.

Damien has released 7 albums with a variety of labels, with the first one out in 1997. As of now, however, he's primarily working with Secretly Canadian (Antony And The Johnsons, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness). You can buy his stuff off iTunes, Amazon, or on his (flash) site.

  • The Brown Derbies - Romeo And Juliet

  • Lyrics here, website here.

This song was originally by Dire Straits, but Indigo Girls have also put out a version that I like quite a lot. The Brown Derbies have been the a capella group at Brown since 1982, and have released nine albums, with the first one out in 1986. You can buy the albums on their MySpace.

  • Sondre Lerche - Don't Be Shallow

  • Lyrics here, wesbite here.

Sondre Lerche is a solo artist, but he records and tours with a backing band. He shifts from poppy to jazzy to bluesy, with everything being very eclectic, no matter what umbrella genre it is. He has two full length albums out, and another on the way, as well as an eight-song EP. He was signed by Astral Werks (Placebo, Badly Drawn Boy, Röyksopp).

Tracks for Sunday, May 21

  • Regina Spektor - Love Affair

  • Lyrics here, Regina's website here.
Regina is with Sire Records (Hot Hot Heat, H.I.M., The Von Blondies). She has 4 CDs out, and you can buy them on her site (which is flash so I can't directly link to--go to Music or Buy), or Amazon or iTunes.

  • Jeremy Kushnier - Stars

  • Lyrics unavailable, band website here (although there's really nothing on it...his MySpace is here, and you can listen to a few more of his songs there)
Jeremy has two albums, which you can buy on CD Baby. He produced them himself with the help of Jonathan Dinklage. He writes and and sings the songs; other instruments are as follows:

    Drums-Tom Cottone
    Bass-Ed Iglewski
    Piano-Assen Doyken
    Guitar-Bobby Baxmeyer
    Violin-Jonathan Dinklage

  • Guster - Careful

  • Lyrics here, website here. They have four albums out and are working on a fifth. You can buy Guster's stuff at their site (merch) or at Amazon or iTunes. Guster was signed by Reprise Records, the parent company of Sire, actually, who signed Regina. The band is:

    Ryan Miller (guitar/vocals)
    Adam Gardner (guitar/vocals)
    Brian Rosenworcel (drums/percussion)

  • Jim Croche - Time In A Bottle

  • Lyrics here, Jim's website here. Jim released his first album with his wife, Ingrid, after being signed by Capital Records. Then, he hit a bit of a slump and got a job as a truck driver. After a few years of that, he met piano/guitar player Maury Muehleisen, and got a three-CD deal with ABC Records (Steely Dan, B.B. King, Ray Charles) in 1972. He put out some of his biggest hits in that period, including Time In A Bottle. Then he died in a plane crash in 1974, just after his biggest single, Big Bad Leroy Brown, hit #1 on the US charts. You can buy his cds off Amazon or iTunes.

  • Marvelous 3 - Every Monday

  • Lyrics here, no band website that I can find (even the MySpace is fan-run). Marvelous 3 is a band from Atlanta that lasted from 1997 to 2003. In 2003, lead singer Butch Walker left to pursue a solo career, which he has done with a moderate amount of success, although his songs seem to be more successful for other people--he wrote Girl All The Bad Guys Want (Bowling For Soup) and Happy Endings (Avril Lavigne). Marvelous 3 released one self produced album, and two albums with Elektra Records (now Atlantic). You can buy them at Amazon or iTunes. Marvelous 3 is:

Butch Walker - lead vocals, guitars
Jayce Fincher - bass guitar, background vocals
Mitch "Slug" McLee - drums, background vocals

Misc: A shout out definitely goes to m3p3 for this episode. I think that all of these songs except for Time In A Bottle came from various rounds of the m3p3 music swap.

  • The Lucksmiths - Guess How Much I Love You

  • Lyrics here, band website here.
The Lucksmiths are with Candle Records. They have 9 albums out, the first on released in 1993, and the most recent in 2005. The band's line up is, according to Candle:
